Bluejays Defeat the Shamrocks
By Grace Behmer
The Pierce Bluejay football took the win over the Columbus Scotus Shamrocks on Sept. 1, 28-20.
During the first quarter things were not looking too good for the Bluejays, who were down 7-0 to the Shamrocks, but Keenan Valverde had an 8-yard run while Kaden Froehlich completed the 2-point conversion, pushing the Bluejays to an 8-7 lead. However, Scotus Central Catholic answered back with a touchdown of their own, making the score 14-8 after the first quarter.
Both teams remained scoreless in the second quarter.
During the third quarter Valverde again had a short 13-yard run, but the Bluejays had a failed two point conversion to stay tied at 14.
The final quarter Valverde had quite the 61-yard run, and he completed the 2-point conversion. The Shamrocks answered back, but could not complete the points after. Valverde also had a 50-yard run, but the kick was no good to end the game 28-20 in favor of the Bluejays.
“I thought we made some good improvement from week 1 to week 2 that ultimately helped us win the game,” states coach Darin Suckstorf.
Champion White had 31 passing yards. Leading the way on offense, Valverde had 300 rushing yards while Froehlich had 19 reception yards.
Leading the team on defense was Korvin Fritz with 15 total tackles, followed by Kaiden Fritz with 10 and White with 8.
The 1-1 Bluejays head to Arlington on Friday, Sept. 8.
