By Addison Croghan
On Tuesday, March 21, the Pierce High Jazz Band competed at the USD Jazz Festival at University of South Dakota. Placing overall 1st in Class 1A, they had an outstanding performance.
The jazz band performed three songs: “The Red Bank Express” by Doug Beach, “Prayer Meetin” by Matt Harris, and “Chili Today, Hot Tamale” by Rick Hirsch.
“I think we gave a great performance,” jazz band veteran Ciara Garcia comments. “We saw a lot of really good bands, and we definitely competed well. We’ve had a lot of morning practices and it feels good to know it has paid off. Our group has great rhythm and groove.”
Band director Mike Sindt states, “It was impressive that we placed 1st in Class 1A considering we were up against eight bands from three different states.”
The members of the jazz band are Amelia Ahlers, Hadleigh Collison, Braxtynne Emerson, Travis Emory, Ciara Garcia, Aubrey Hanson, Kodi Kuether, Christian Nordby, Tate Reinke, Kenna Sedlacek, Spencer Sindt, Kaylee Steffen, Isaiah Yarde, and last but not least, Jackson Zimmerman.
The next performance from the jazz band will be at the Northeast Jazz Festival at the Northeast Community College on Tuesday, March 28.
