Healthy Eating Options at PHS

By Emma Risinger

Pierce High is home to many high-performing students, athletes, musicians, public speakers, and actors alike. However, it is especially important for all high school students to make nutrition a priority to achieve their highest potential.

Principal Mark Brahmer recognizes this truth. When asked to provide his thoughts on healthy eating in high school, he said, “The benefits of making wise food choices in your diet can make a major impact on a person's performance in every aspect of their lives. Anytime a person eats clean, nutrient dense foods, they feel better, and in time, they will perform better physically and intellectually. In turn, a person who eats healthier tends to look better physically. Then when a person looks in the mirror and sees a better image, it becomes an important part of a positive, healthy psyche as well.”

The National Institute of Health recommends that high school students eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Drinking plenty of water is also very important. In addition, it is suggested that students include whole grains, as well as low-fat protein and dairy foods in their diets.

An easy place for students to make the first step in this direction is the salad bar. Students could aim to include a fresh fruit and vegetable in their lunch every day.

It is important to understand the value of a nutritious diet in regard to the academic performance of high school students.

Bluejays, let’s recognize the importance of healthy eating!
