UNO Jazz Festival

By Skylar Scholting

On February 24, the Pierce High jazz band traveled to Omaha to compete in the UNO Jazz Festival and finished with a superior rating.

At the festival, the band played their music “Red Bank Express,” “Prayer Meeting,” and “Chili Today, Hot Tamale.” After that, the jazz band got a clinic with one of the judges who gave them feedback on how they performed.

Mr. Mike Sindt, director of the band, said, “They did really really well as a group. They played stylistically correct. In some of the categories, the judges gave us perfect scores, so they did quite well. (We) still have a little bit of work to do before our next festival.

Some of the members also received musicianship awards. Those who received the award were Travis Emory for drums and piano, Spencer Sindt for trombone, and Peyton Wieting for the bari saxophone.

To cap off the experience, the jazz band gets to see a concert of the UNO as well as special guests from all over the world.

When asked about her experience, sophomore Aubrey Hanson stated, “It was a great experience that I look forward to every year.”
