Speech Team Runners-up at Mid-State Conference

By Emma Risinger

On Saturday, February 25, the speech team set out for Boone Central for the Mid-State conference competition, and Pierce took second place overall, giving them the title of runners-up.

Starting with medalists in group events, Nikolas Harvey, Dalton Svoboda, Kaila Speiker, and Brielle Unseld placed second in OID, and Isaiah Yarde and Harvey’s duet placed sixth.

Harvey gives his feelings about his and the team’s performances at conference when he remarks, “I thought leading up to conference that myself and the team were as prepared as we could have been, thus when it came time to performing, we executed. Some of us may not have gotten to the place we had wanted to, but sometimes there are some mistakes, and in the end you can't help the judges' decisions. We just have to go out and perform, and I feel we did that. And district wise, I’m excited; there are definitely some things I need to work on and perfect but I'm excited to be going into it and hoping to make it to state again.

In the prose events, Mya Johnson ranked fifth in serious. Spieker and Alyssa Cederburg placed fourth and sixth in humorous, respectively.

In poetry, Zaylah Pfanstiel placed 4th.

In public address events, Unseld was 4th in informative and Keli Shermer was 5th in persuasive. Emma Risinger was conference champion in extemporaneous speaking with 1st place. In addition, Bode Hoffmann was 5th overall in entertainment.

Head coach Miss Amy Fleer provides her thoughts on the teams performance at conference, as well as her outlook moving forward to districts when she says, "The team had a terrific day at our conference tournament. We were competing against the best of the best from northeast Nebraska, and I was very proud that we pushed through the day to walk away as the conference runners-up! Districts is a whole different mindset, against a different set of schools. If we really work on fine tuning the little things in practice this week, I'm hoping we will be taking a good amount of events to state."

The team will be competing at the district competition on Saturday, March 4, at Wayne High School.
