Choosing a College Roommate
By Savannah Beutler
As graduation approaches, many high school seniors are making one of the first big decisions: choosing a college roommate. While it may seem like a small thing, students say the choice can have a major impact on their college experience.
“I am a little bit nervous because I don't want to 'not' find a roommate and then get stuck with someone I don’t get along with or connect with,” Mikenzie Lawrence commented.
For some seniors, the process starts with social media. This allows students to connect with potential roommates based on shared interests and preferences.
Others decide to room with someone they already know, making the transition to college easier.
A lot of students say that it is important to talk about things like sleep schedules, cleanliness, and how social a person might be before deciding who to room with. Even those little things can make a big difference when living in the same space with another person every day.
Sometimes, not every roommate situation is going to be perfect. Some seniors just try to stay open-minded and see it as part of their college experience.
“I am scared that when I pick a roommate they might be weird or might not match my personality,” Isabelle Kuehler said.
This is a big chance to learn independence and learn how to compromise.
As seniors get ready to leave for college, choosing a roommate is only one of the many decisions they are going to have to make.
