Pierce High Gets Rid of Technology
By Savannah Beutler
Pierce Junior Senior High School stepped away from the screens on April 16 and 17 as everyone participated in the school-wide no-technology days.
During this, the students did not have their MacBooks, as they turned them in during their first period classes.
The purpose of the event was to encourage students to focus more on in-person engagement and classroom engagement. The teachers had to adjust accordingly and make lessons tech-free, which relied more on writing and hands-on activities.
“I wanted to get kids the experience to unplug and not have to worry about a computer or phone in hand all the time, and it made it seem like a simpler time,” principal Mark Brahmer commented.
Alongside the tech-free days, Pierce also offered a cellphone challenge for students. Those who chose to participate and complete the challenge received an incentive of three days of leaving early after the fourth period, along with 25 bonus points.
“The 25 bonus points on tests is mostly why I did it. But I also wanted to see how different my day would look without my phone, and it turned out to be pretty productive,” senior Mya Johnson said.
Overall, the no-tech days and cell phone challenge gave students a chance to step away from the screens and to be more interactive with one another.
