Students Have Fun Making Bets Until They Lose
By Alanna McKeown
At Pierce High, students are finding new ways to make competitions. Across classrooms, hallways, sports fields, friendly wagers are popping up, but instead of cash, students are betting on wrestling matches, March madness, or any sports games.
Seventh grader Jamison Neal was one to participate in a bet on a Monday funday wrestling match with Jason Freudenburg against Gary Shada. Neal made a bet with math and science teacher Tyler Legate that if Freudenburg lost he had to run two laps around the track. In the end Neal did end up running his lap because Shada pinned Freudenburg.
“I’m pretty mad that I lost the bet because Mr. Shada cheated,” Neal stated.
Another bet that was going on in Jaxon Daake’s classroom was if Nebraska made it to the final four in March madness, Sean Monroe would shave his head. Luckily for him Nebraska did not make it to the final four.
“It was the worst bet that I could have made because I would have had to shave my head. I'm very glad that I won the bet,” says Monroe.
Non-monetary bets are growing at Pierce High, showing that sometimes, the thrill of a challenge is reward enough.
