Gifts Made New
By Skyler Michael Stern
Many of us are scrambling to find the perfect gift for our families at the last minute. For some of us, we don’t have much money at all, or just choose not to spend a whole lot.
Secondhand shopping is when we buy used items or re-gift them. Thrift stores tend to pop off right before Christmas because of how many customers are buying last-minute gifts. Oftentimes, the items we buy second-hand are clothes, books, and even toys.
We all have questioned how clean we think these items are since they have been previously used or worn. Thrift shops thoroughly inspect these items and clean them themselves, ready for customers to buy in the best condition they can be in.
The most popular thing to do is to re-gift the previous year's Christmas presents.
“I was at a Christmas party with my dad's girlfriend's family, and someone got me a perfume set that I already had. I didn’t have a gift to give my friend, so I wrapped up the perfume set I got and gave it to her,” Naomi Sullivan, a senior, states.
Another senior, Isabelle Kuehler, says, “I actually re-gift items all the time. Usually, I will get gifted lotion and wrap it up and gift it to another person who would definitely use it more than I.”
Whether buying secondhand or regifting, the spirit of giving rather than receiving is the spirit of the season.
