Mid-State Conference One Act Places Fourth

By Elizabeth Furstenau

The one act crew had their first performance of the year. The cast and crew made their way to Norfolk to perform at Johnny Carson Theater for Mid-State conference one act on Tuesday, November 18.

I know all of the coaches and myself are extremely proud of how the performance went,” head director Brock Bretschneider said. “Everyone worked together and gave us the best performance we have seen so far. For the next few weeks we are going to be working on bigger expressions and just making sure every performer and crew member is performing at their absolute best.”

Through their efforts, they managed to place fourth out of the 10 schools that performed.

The one act competitions not only acknowledge the placement of each school, but also outstanding performers. This year, the outstanding performers included Elizabeth Furstenau as Professor Tammy Tweedum, Mya Johnson as Nelda Nurdford, Isabelle Streff as Madame Soothsister, Lillian Blank as Tillie Tweedum, and Spencer Sindt as Neville Nurdford.

“I genuinely believe that the play we are putting on this year is one of the best we’ve done yet and our placement at conference shows that,” Johnson, a senior, states. “We are seeing a lot of new performers on stage this year and their hard work has definitely paid off. I am very excited to see how we do at districts because if we keep this up, I believe that we will do extremely well.”

“I was a little hesitant when going out for one act at first,” first-year actor Brayden Suckstorf claims. “But after practice and the first play, it turned out to be really fun and would encourage others to go out for one act.”

This year’s play is “The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb” by Craig Sodaro. The play follows Professor Tweedum after she has unearthed the tomb of King Rottentot. Some are jealous of her findings and plan to steal her riches. Other characters, such as Tillie’s lover Willy Wright and Tweedum’s assistant Dr. Della DeVries, assist in the protection of the riches and the Tweedum family. On top of all of the mishaps going on, there is a mummy wandering around, haunting the crew. Mistaken identities and corny lines create mystery with a laughable atmosphere.

Make sure to check out this one act at the auditorium on Monday, November 24, at 7 p.m.
