The Honor Band Plays On

By Garett Riedel

Music to the ears, the Pierce High band kept on playing by hosting this year's Pierce High honor band for grades 6-9.

“It was fun to see all the students from 15 different schools come together to make some great music,” Pierce band director Michael Sindt says

A total of 170 students from 15 schools attended this year.

For the sixth grade and seventh grades, they played “Fanfare for Our Time” by Tyler Grant, “After The Rain” by Matt Neufeld, “Cha Cha Lite” by Eric Osterling and “Outta Time” by Christiana Huss.

For the eighth and ninth grades, they played “Fireburst Fanfare” by Roland Barrett, “A Song for Friends” by Larry Daehn, “The Message on the Rock” by Robert Shelden, “Blue Ridge Reel” by Brian Balmages and “Brass in the Basement” by Larry Neeck.

Aubrie Zimmerman, freshman participant, says, “I feel like the band played very well given the amount of time we were given. It was a great experience to meet all the different kids from the schools and play with them.”

The two guest conductors for the day were Stacy Bean, who is in her 31st year of teaching and currently works at Horizon Middle School in Kearney teaching 6th-8th band. Then there was Gwen Wenisch, the director of the bands of Yankton High School over the past 24 years.

The concert for the honor band was held following the day’s practice sessions.
