Lady Jays Basketball

Pierce Cruises Past Flyers


Friday, January 26, in a rescheduled match, the Pierce Lady Jays flew past the Humphrey St. Francis Flyers 33-20. 

The Lady Jays dominated the entire game, leading 10-1 after the first quarter of play. 

Then Pierce increased their lead in the second period, outscoring the Flyers 8-2 for an 18-3 lead going into the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter was much of the same, with Pierce still holding a 27-14 lead after three quarters. 

Both teams added six to the scoreboard in the final quarter of play, with Pierce holding on for the victory 33-20. 

Prior to the Pierce game, St. Francis had been averaging 48 points per game. 


Pierce Lady Jays Fall to the Warriors

On Thursday, January 25, the Pierce Lady Jays battled against the Crofton Warriors and took the very hard loss, 35-32, with Crofton winning. 

“The girls played some great defense. We need some more practice or experience in the end of game situations,” states head coach Darin Suckstorf.

Starting off in the first quarter, Hadley Wragge had five points and Ava Knox and Skylar Scholting both added two points, ending the quarter with nine points. After holding Crofton to only five, the Bluejays led 9-5.

Dribbling on over to the second quarter, Knox, Wragge, and Abigail Cone all scored two points and Nora Herian added three, leaving the score 18-15 at halftime with Lady Jays in the lead. 

In the third quarter Pierce continued to dominate. Cone and Scholting both had four points, and finished the third quarter 26-21, with Pierce ahead.

And lastly in the fourth quarter, Cone scored four points along with Scholting scoring two points, adding six points to the final score, ending the game 35-32 with Crofton winning. Pierce led until the last 43 seconds of the fourth quarter.

The Lady Jays battled hard against the Warriors and unfortunately took the hard loss. Head coach Darin Suckstorf says, “The girls did a lot of nice things versus Crofton including hitting some big shots and taking some big steps.” 

The Lady Jays will play next on Thursday, February 1, in the Mid-State conference tournament.


The Lady Jays Basketball Team Defeated West Point Beemer.

The Lady Jays basketball team defeated West Point-Beemer by 13 points leaving the score to be 51-38. 

Head coach Darin Suckstorf says, “The girls did a great job of executing the game plan of guarding the 3-point line on defense and getting great shots on offense, which ultimately led to a win versus a good team in West Point-Beemer.

Starting off strong, in the first quarter the Lady Jays managed to score 13 and holding the Cadets to seven, making the score 13-7. 

The Lady Jays still outscored West Point-Beemer by six points in the second quarter. The Bluejays scored 15 points in the second quarter, not letting West Point-Beemer score any more than nine points.

In the third quarter both teams scored 12 points.

Finally in the fourth quarter the Bluejays scored 11 points not letting the Cadets get the win, making the final score 51-38.  

The girls got 22 rebounds all together. The Lady Jays got 12 assists and 10 steals. 

Skylar Scholting got a total of seven rebounds and five assists. Abigail Cone grabbed six rebounds total. 

Senior Madelyn Hanson says, “I thought the girls fought hard and our defense was solid.
