Proper Student Section Etiquette

by Haiden Magnussen

With districts right around the corner, it’s time to talk about the biggest supporters for our sports teams, our student section. There are many different rules that we must remember when participating in the student section.

Rule 1: Seniority. If you’re an underclassman standing in the front row and a senior comes along, you’re required to move back. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to stand in the front row when you’re a senior.

Addison Croghan, a player and student section participant in girls’ games, talks about the importance of student sections by saying, “It affects the players a lot more mentally than you think. Student sections can really hinder your confidence as well as help momentum changes throughout the game.”

Rule 2: Participate in themes. There is a banner of themes hung up in the commons as well as in the library. The themes are also announced over the intercom when announcements are made so make sure to be listening to these.

Rule 3: Participate in cheers. We have to be loud and make sure that the teams can hear our chant. As Croghan said before, a student section can really affect momentum changes and help out our team. We really want to be the sixth player on the court.

Rule 4: Be positive to our team. This rule really blends in with the last. We need to be positive to our team to help out their confidence. Make sure that we have a positive mindset throughout the whole game.

Morgan Moeller, also a player and student section participant in boys’ games, says, “Student sections are a major part of the sport. A home crowd can give you a positive feeling and make you play better throughout the game. On the flip side, an away student section can give you a bad feeling that takes a while to shed.”

And how could the most important rule be forgotten?

Rule 5: Show up. It’s kind of hard to have a student section without the students. The rest of these rules can’t be followed if we don’t unite as one big Bluejay family and cheer on our beloved sports.
