Pierce Bluejays Bring the Heat to Howells-Dodge Jaguars

By Autumn Lambrecht

On Thursday, December 1, the Pierce Bluejays took on the Howells-Dodge Jaguars on Pierce’s court, and secured the home court win, with a score of 37-32.

For the first quarter of the new season, the Pierce Bluejays had a solid defense against the Howells-Dodge Jaguars, and limited the Jaguars to only putting up five points, while the Bluejays scored six.

Second quarter was a higher scoring quarter for both teams, with the Jaguars scoring eight points, but the Bluejays found their way around the Jaguar defense and scored 13 points, ending the first half with the score of 19-13 in favor of Pierce.

”I thought we played well due to the football turnaround circumstances,” comments senior Jacksen Wachholtz. “I thought we played way better than expected defensively.”

Coming back from halftime, the Bluejays struggled offensively and only added two points to the board; however, the Jaguars scored a total of ten, bringing the score up to 23-21, with Jaguars taking the lead.

For the fourth and final quarter, the Bluejays came back strong and nearly doubled the Jaguars fourth quarter points, scoring 16 points, and defended the Jaguars so well, Pierce held them to only scoring nine points. The game flipped around, back in favor of the Bluejays, with the ending score of 37-32, starting off the Bluejay season strong.

Head coach Mike Emory adds, “The boys played extremely hard and extremely well on the defensive end. Overall, we were happy to come out of the game with a win and now can go back to work and improve on the things we see on film. We just need more repetitions and practice time so that we can get into basketball shape and continue to develop our games.”

Overall game stats consisted of Deon Watts being lead scorer with 10 points, Wachholtz scoring nine points, Benjamin Brahmer following with eight points, Abram Scholting contributing six points, and Addison Croghan and Colby Anderson both scoring two points.

The team had an overall of eight steals with Watts taking three, Croghan taking two, and Wachholtz, Brahmer, and Scholting each grabbing one steal.

The Bluejays also had 19 total defensive rebounds.
The Pierce Bluejays next game will be December 9, against Boone Central at Boone Central High School.
