Lady Jays Fall to NEN Vipers

On Thursday, September 8, Pierce took on the Northeast Nebraska Vipers (Wisner-Pilger), and even though the Lady Jays fought hard, the game ended in a loss with a score of 15-0.

Starting in the first inning, NEN put up four runs on the board, while Pierce scored none. In the second, the Vipers put up 11 runs on the board and Pierce still with none. Heading into the third, Pierce was unable to score any runs, and the game ended because of the run rule.

Coach Marika VonSeggern says, “NEN is a tough team. They’re very solid defensively and are solid from their first batter to their last. We were able to hit off their pitcher but unfortunately, we hit it right to where they were. Defensively we only made a few errors, but against a team like that, you really can’t have any.”

The Lady Jays are at home against David City Aquanis on Thursday, September 15.

By Addison Sporleder

The Pierce Lady Jays hosted the Guardian Angel Central Catholic Bluejays at the Pierce softball complex on Tuesday, September 6. Even though the Lady Jays fought hard, the game ended in a loss with a score of 13-4.

Starting in the first inning, GACC put up two runs on the board, while Pierce scored one. In the second, both teams held each other to no runs. Heading into the third, Guardian Angels scored two runs, but the Lady Jays were unable to score. In the fourth, the Bluejays put up one more run, but held the Lady Jays to none. Moving to the fifth, GACC was able to add three runs to their score, and Pierce brought in one more. In the sixth inning, Pierce held GACC scoreless and was able to score two runs. The seventh and final inning consisted of the GACC Bluejays adding five more runs to their total and holding the Lady Jays to none. Despite Pierce’s efforts, the game ended 13-4.

Centerfielder Aubrey Hanson commented, “It felt really good to rob a homerun. It brought my morale up after a couple of iffy plays. I think we should have continued the energy we had at the  beginning of the game and carry it out to the end.”

Pierce had a total of four hits. Isabelle Skrdla led the team with two, and Brooke Reddest had one. Madelyn Hanson also contributed one hit, which was a triple. Reddest had two RBIs in the game and M. Hanson added one. Out of the four runs, both Hansons each scored one with M. Hanson scoring by stealing home. Skrdla and Peyton Brunckhorst also scored one run each.

Head coach Marika VonSeggern stated, “In the first part of the game, we played well defensively. GACC is a solid hitting team. We knew they were going to be able to hit well and put up some runs. We just need to get the outs we can and not give up extra runs.”

The softball team will be back in action on their home field on Thursday, September 17, against David City Aquinas.

Lady Jays Fall to the O’Neill Eagles

By Ella Gaes

The Pierce Lady Jays softball team traveled to O’Neill on Thursday, September 1, where they fell short of the win with a score of 13-1.

Starting off in the first inning, O’Neill scored three runs to Pierce’s zero runs. Continuing to the second inning, Pierce fought back with one run, but it was not enough compared to O’Neill’s four runs. Moving to the third, the Lady Jays were unable to score while O’Neill put six runs on the board, ending the game 13-1, with O’Neill on top.

Sophomore Alexis Sporleder commented on the game, “Our energy wasn't really there, and I think that showed by how we played. We are preparing in practice by using the batting cage and continuing to work on infield and outfield.”

Pierce had a total of three hits throughout the game. Brooke Reddest, Madelyn Hanson, and Hayle DeBoer each had a hit.

Reddest was the only runner batted in.

Pierce had five bases stolen. Darnall had two bases stolen, then DeBoer, M. Hanson, and Aubrey Hanson had one.

Darnall also commented on the game, “I feel the game showed us what we need to work on. Although it was a rough game, we will be back on it for the next games.”

The Lady Jays will be sliding into their next varsity triangular at Wayne High School on Tuesday, September 13, starting at 4:30 p.m.
