One Act at Mid-State at Johnny Carson Theatre

by Emma Risinger

On Tuesday, November 16, the one-actors of Pierce High hit the road for Johnny Carson Theatre in Norfolk to put on their production of The Canterville Ghost, a dramedy set in 1910. The competition was the first of the season. Fellow conference competitors, Wayne, Boone Central, Norfolk Catholic, Guardian Angels Central Catholic, Battle Creek, Crofton, Cedar Catholic, and O’Neill also attended.

After loading set and props onto the U-haul, the cast and crew piled into the bus and arrived at Johnny Carson in time to watch both Boone Central and Norfolk Catholic before beginning preparations for their own play. Once hair and makeup was done, costumes were on, and the set was in place, the performance began and went smoothly.

Head coach Kate Bretschneider added to this when she said, “Overall, the kids did a great job at conference one act. It was our first time traveling this year, and everyone came together to put on a good performance. There were issues with the sound system at Johnny Carson, but the kids overcame it and did not let it affect them. We received some nice feedback that allows us to make adjustments for districts. The main focus moving forward will be working on developing the cast's characters and polishing transitions.”

Once the show was wrapped up, and everything was tucked away again, the performances had concluded, and it was time for awards. Pierce got 4th overall, and several actors received outstanding one act performance awards. These people were Shawn Zellmer, Zachary Price, Alyssa Cederburg, Chloey Cederburg, Christopher Efta, and Emma Risinger. In addition to this, Chloey Cederburg received best overall supporting actress.

C. Cederburg remarked on the placements and the team's performance when she said, “I was not expecting it at all and was very shocked, but receiving it is going to make me work harder at practices to be the best that I can be. I feel like we have a great chance at districts. If we keep working hard in practice, I believe that we can go on to state.”

It seems that once the team polishes things up, their production will be a rockstar performance and will go far in districts, and beyond.

District B-3 competition will be Thursday, December 2, at Central Community College in Columbus.
