Alena Peters Represents Pierce at State Golf
Sophomore Alena Peters spent two days, October 12 and 13, at Elks Country Club in Columbus to finish her first Class C state golf appearance shooting a combined two day score of 217 and ending in a tie for 58th.
In the first round on Monday, Peters shot a 112, but on Tuesday she managed to shave off seven strokes and finish with a 105. In noting the improvement in the two days, she remarked, “It just helped to have a lot of people there cheering me on and like making me laugh when I would have a bad shot and playing with people that were nice and that I could talk to.”
Looking at the performance of the team as a whole, girls golf coach Melinda Stelling said, “I am proud of the team for their continued improvement as the season progressed - their lowest team score for the season came at districts.”
With only one senior (Rebecca Albrecht), the Lady Jays will return seven members next season. Coach Stelling noted, “The girls are already excited for next year as we have everyone back except one. Hopefully they will play a lot and work hard in the offseason to reach their goals for next year.”
During the offseason, Peters said, “I want to get more clubs and work more with those so I have more options when hitting different lengths of shots.”
As far as looking to her future with the golf team, Peters said, “I want to consistently score below 100 at meets.”
