by Ella Gaes

The Pierce Lady Jays swept Crofton away in last week's volleyball match on Thursday; passing, setting, and hitting into a 3-1 win.

Pierce won the first set 25-18. Crofton came through and won the second set with Pierce right behind them with a score of 25-20. In the third set Pierce took charge and won 25-20. By the fourth set, Pierce had the Warriors all figured out and took the set 25-15, ending the game.

Head coach, Zach Weber commented, “Other than the second set, we played very well offensively. I’m very proud of the growth we’ve seen in our serve receive and in our attack. Defensively, we need to get a lot more touches at the net and read a lot better in the back row. We made a few good plays, but we have to be able to pick up balls and get quality touches more consistently.”

Defensively, Pierce had 54 digs led by Kenzie Moeller with 28; Morgan Moeller followed behind with 12. As a team, the Lady Jays only had total blocks with Abby Meier contributing 1 solo and 2 assisted blocks.

Attacking was led by both Jaya Wachholtz and Faith Lubisher with a total of 10 kills each. Following right behind them was Kennedy Warneke with 9 kills, M. Moeller with 3, and Meier with 2. As for serving, Warneke had 4 aces followed by Brielle Unseld with 2, and K. Moeller with 1.

Sophomore setter Unseld said, “I think we played very well as a team and had fun. We had some errors but worked them out quickly.”

The next game for the Lady Jays is against Lutheran High Northeast in Norfolk on Thursday, September 24.
