Lady Jays Volleyball

Lady Jays Play Wakefield Tournament

The Pierce Lady Jays played the Wakefield Round Robin Tournament on Thursday, September 10, and Saturday, September 12, at Wakefield winning four of the six games they played to finish in 3rd place overall. 

On Thursday, Pierce played Hartington Cedar Catholic first. The Lady Jays beat the Trojans in two sets. The first set ended with a score of 25-18, and the second set ended 25-12 with the Lady Jays winning. 

Junior Kennedy Warneke was the top hitter during this game with seven kills. Following were freshman Jaya Wachholtz and sophomore Morgan Moeller both with five kills, and senior Faith Lubischer and senior Abigail Meier both with two kills. Lubischer, M. Moeller, and Kenzie Moeller all had one ace serve. 

Head coach Zach Weber commented on the tournament by saying, “Overall, I’m happy with the way we competed. Our effort and enthusiasm were constants through each match, and we had a few girls make big steps forward in their performance. We have a long way to go through in a lot of areas.” 

The Lady Jays next and last game of Thursday night was against Bancroft Rosalie Lyons-Decatur. The Lady Jays went to three sets against the Wolverines with the first set ending 25-23, the second set 19-25, and the third set ended with a score of 22-25. 

Warneke was again top hitter with 12 kills, M. Moeller had seven kills, Wachholtz with six kills, Lubischer with four kills, freshman Maggie Painter had three kills, and both K. Moeller, and sophomore Brielle Unseld had one kill each. Both Warneke and Painter had three ace serves each, K. Moeller, Lubischer, and Unseld each had two ace serves, and M. Moeller had one ace serve. 

The Lady Jays finished the rest of the games on Saturday. The first game of the day was against Wakefield. The Lady Jays blew the Trojans out of the water in two sets with the first set ending 25-11, and the second set 25-19. Warneke and Lubischer were top hitters of the game with seven kills each. Following were Wachholtz with six kills, Meier with four, M. Moeller with three, and Unseld with one kill. M. Moeller had the most ace serves of the game with a total of six. K. Moeller had three ace serves, Unseld had two, and Lubischer had one. 

The next game was against the Lutheran High Northeast Eagles. There were only two sets with the first set ending with a score of 8-25, and the second set ending with a score of 21-25. Top hitters were Lubischer and Wachholtz with four kills each. Warneke had three kills, and Meier, Unseld, M. Moeller, and K. Moeller each had two kills. Both Warneke and M. Moeller had one ace serve in this game. 

Pierce played the Ponca Indians for their next game. The Lady Jays won the game in three sets. The Jays lost the first set with a score of 21-25, but they picked themselves back up and won the second set with a score of 25-15 and the third set 25-18. Lubischer had the most kills with a total of 13. Following were Warneke with 12, Wachholtz with 10, M. Moeller with six, Meier with five, Unseld with three, and both Painter and K. Moeller had one kill each. As for ace serves, Lubischer, Warneke, Unseld each had three, M. Moeller had two, and Painter had one ace serve. 

The final game of the tournament for the Lady Jays was against the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears. The Lady Jays barely fell in the first set with a score of 27-25, but came back in the second set ending with 25-18, and the third set 25-22. Wachholtz had the most kills of the game with 14. Lubischer had 10, Warneke had nine, M. Moeller had five, Unseld had two, and senior Mikala Stone and Meier had one kill each. K. Moeller and M. Moeller had three ace serves each, Warneke, Lubischer, and Painter had two, and Unseld had one ace serve. 

Libero Kenzie Moeller said the tournament went well by saying, “We still need to work on starting strong, but I thought we cleaned up the small things very well.” 

The next game for the Lady Jays will be away on Thursday, September 17, against the Crofton Warriors. 


Pierce JV Volleyball Team Battles in the Wisner Tournament

On Saturday, September 12, the JV volleyball team made their way to Wisner to face three teams, and the girls triumphed over David City, but lost the battle against Wisner-Pilger and Columbus Lakeview.

In the first game, they played David City and took the win in two sets. The final score of the first set was 25-23 and the second was 25-16. 

For their second game, the Lady Jays fought against Wisner. The girls played strong and won the first set 25-17. In the second set, the Bluejays got swept away and lost with a score of  8-25. Lastly, in the final set, Pierce went to work but couldn’t pull through, ending the set with a score of 12-15. 

The Bluejays had one final game to play against Lakeview. The Bluejays had a rough start and lost the first set by 5 points. They kicked it in gear and whooped Lakeview in the second set with a score of 25-19. Then, in the third set, the Bluejays fought hard but lost the set with a score of 10-15.

Coach Ellie Moeller said, “I thought the games were played competitively, we just need to fix the little things on our side of the net. But overall, our girls played very well!”

The girls play their next game at Battle Creek on Thursday, September 17. 


Volleyball Takes Tough Losses

Pierce’s volleyball C team hosted a triangular match against Wayne and Battle Creek on Thursday, September 10; however, Pierce took a tough blow and lost their two games. 

The Lady Jays first game against Wayne was played in two sets with the first set ending with a score of 23-25 and the second set ending at 16-25. 

Their second game was against Battle Creek, the first set ended with a score of 16-25, and the second set was 20-25. 

Some highlights from their games were Taylor Miller, Katie Vogt, and Ciara Garcia all scoring 4 aces in total. 

Kallie Edins, a sophomore defensive specialist said, “We picked up the pace of the game towards the end, and we started having fun playing the game. We should continue to work on communicating on the court more.” 

The C team will be back in action on Thursday, September 17, at Battle Creek.
