One-Act Presents Medea for Community

by Victoria Orona

Pierce High’s one-act held their community performance on Saturday, November 17, at 6 p.m. Director Danielle Goetsch also presented awards to both cast and crew.

This year’s play is Medea, a tragedy of a powerful witch whose husband Jason left her for the daughter of Creon, who is the king of Corinth. Medea, played by junior Emilia Goetsch, is enraged and plans to get her revenge; however, Glauce, played by senior Elizabeth Harris, asks her father to banish Medea from Corinth. An old friend of Medea and Jason, Aegeus, played by junior Cayden Retzlaff, allows Medea to take refuge in Athens following her banishment. Before Medea leaves, she decides that her children would be better off in Corinth with Jason instead of banished and taking refuge in Athens. The Greek Chorus, which includes, Rose Graham, Sydney Erickson, Halle Ross, Abygail Streff, and Chloey Cederburg, tells Medea to take her children to Athens and flee. Instead of taking their advice, Medea follows through with her revenge plan and kills her sons, which in turns makes Jason want to kill her. Only then does Medea finally leave for Athens.

After the performance, there was a five-minute break for parents to be able to take pictures, then awards were presented. The Career Member for being in one-act and all-school from 7th grade all the way through 12th was senior Peter Halsey. Best Overall Senior went to Janae Arens, Best Overall Junior went to Emilia Goetsch, Best Overall Sophomore went to Abygail Streff, and Best Overall Freshman was Shawn Zellmer. The Best Crew Member award went to senior Jacob Pedersen. The Best Newcomer went to junior Sydney Erickson, and the Improvement award went to Elizabeth Harris.

The one-act cast and crew will perform again at districts on Thursday, November 29, for a shot at state
