Students Meet for Quiz Bowl
Nineteen Pierce High students showed interest in quiz bowl competition by attending a morning preliminary meeting on Thursday, February 16. Mrs. Phyllis Wood, sponsor of quiz bowl, discussed the various competitions available.
Pierce has competed in multiple academic contests through the years. The most prominent ones have been: Midstate Conference quiz bowl, ESU 8 quiz bowl at Neligh, and the Northeast Community College quiz bowl and academic contest.
At quiz bowl competitions, the questions are comprised of random trivia. Some question topics are geography, math, history, science, language, and vocabulary.
The Midstate Conference quiz bowl will be held at Hartington CC on March 26. This contest is a round-robin tournament, with the highest-scoring teams advancing to a final round. Two teams, each consisting of four students, will represent grades nine and ten; and two teams will represent grades eleven and twelve.
The contest at Neligh will be on March 28. The team there will consist of four high school students and an alternate.
The NECC Academic Contest and quiz bowl will be on April 16 at the NECC campus. Four high school students and an alternate will comprise the quiz bowl team. Other students who compete this day will take tests in subjects ranging from English to Spanish, World History to Diesel Mechanics, Health and Physical Education to Music Theory.
Mrs. Wood said, “Quiz bowl is a lot of fun. I think Pierce has a good mix of veteran members and new students. We should be able to do pretty well.”
