Pierce Qualifies Two for the State Speech Meet
By Claudia Riggert
On Monday, March 11, the speech team set out for the B-3 district speech meet, and the Pierce team took fourth place and qualified two for state speech.
To begin, junior Amelia Alhers and senior Emma Risinger qualified for the state speech meet through Risinger’s second place in persuasive speaking, and Ahlers's third place in informative speaking.
Alhers states, “I didn’t think I performed my best, but it was still enough for a qualification. I am super excited for this opportunity.”
Secondly, the medalists in group events, the district OID (oral interpretation of drama) including Aubrey Hanson, Alexis Sporleder, and Nickolas Efta received a sixth place.
In humorous prose, Spencer Sindt placed fourth and Josie Painter placed fifth.
Mya Johnson took home fifth in serious prose, and Lillian Blank captured sixth in poetry.
In the POI (program oral interpretation) category, Johnson achieved fifth and Ashley Wacker got seventh.
In extemporaneous speaking, Risinger placed fourth; Hanson took fifth in entertainment speaking.
Head coach Amy Nelson comments on the district competition and overall season experiences stating, “I was very happy to have 11 medalists at our district meet. That was the most medals we’ve placed all season. While I was hoping for a few more events to make the state tournament, I am very excited to be sending both Emma and Amelia. With such a young team this year, we finished strong and I am excited for the years to come.”
Pierce High wishes the best of luck to Alhers and Risinger at the Class B state competition on March 20!
