Pierce Public Schools Kick Off Red Ribbon Week

by Kennedy Warneke

Red Ribbon Week is an annual event that takes place at Pierce High School throughout one week during October. To kick off the week, Monday was “Be Yourself” day where students dressed as they normally would. Also on Monday, an assembly took place where certain students put on masks and had a dance-off. The meaning behind the assembly was to teach everyone to take off their mask and show who they really are. On Tuesday, students and faculty wore their pajamas to school. Red day was celebrated on Wednesday as the students came to school wearing all the red they could. Thursday, the students dressed up as their Halloween costumes. To finish off the week, students wore blue for spirit day to show their support for the football team in their first game of the playoffs later that night.

Guidance counselor, Danielle Goetsch, states, “Red Ribbon Week is all about exposure and keeping the issue of drugs and alcohol in people’s mind. I hope students think about integrity and character in the face of drugs and alcohol.”

Ritter Oestreich, head of student council red ribbon committee, also adds “Red Ribbon Week is for kids to feel like they can be themselves no matter who they are without being judged, that’s why we had a main theme of “Unmasking our true selves.”

Students are also encouraged to watch a daily video during study hall and answer questions in order to win some prizes from the guidance office.
