Boys and Girls State Representatives Announced

by Cayce Carlson

Maiya Baumann and Caydan Retzlaff were selected by the American Legion Auxiliary to attend Cornhusker Boys and Girls State in the first week of June at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.

The Girls State alternate is Hailey Abler, and Boys State alternate is Jakob Edins.

Boys and Girls State is a program to teach young people about what it means to be an United States citizen and how our state government works. The main purpose is to educate youth about the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American citizenship. There will be 400 boys and 400 girls who will be attending this event from across the state. Applicants have to have at least a 3.0 GPA and have to write an essay about what being an American means to them. The Boy and Girl Staters are chosen by the essays they wrote, which are read by officers from the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary, who sponsor the candidates from Pierce each year.
