JH Lady Jays Battle Vikings

The Pierce junior high Lady Jays played Columbus Lakeview Thursday, November 15, for their first game of the season. The Pierce A team won with a score of 25-23, and the Pierce B team lost 15-20.

In the first quarter of the A team game, the Lady Jays allowed the Vikings to score nine points while scoring seven. Reagan Theisen and Ella Gaes both had a basket, and Morgan Moeller had a three-pointer during the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Lady Jays took over the lead as the Pierce defense held Columbus to zero points and scored eight. Addison Sporleder scored one point on a free-throw, Moeller scored five points having a two-pointer and a three-pointer, and Alyssa Cederburg added two points to the score for the Lady Jays. Going into halftime the score was 15-9.

In the third quarter, Lakeview scored nine points, but the Lady Jays matched them with nine of their own. Theisen, Kallie Edins, and Cederburg all scored two points. Sporleder scored a three pointer adding to the Pierce score.

To finish off the game, the Vikings scored five points, and Pierce scored one point with a free throw from Cederburg, but it was enough to hold onto their lead for the win. The ending score of the game 25-23 with the Bluejays up.

In the first quarter of the B team game, Pierce and the Vikings stayed even with four points each. The scorer for Pierce was Edins with two baskets.

The Pierce defense allowed Columbus five points during the second quarter, and with two baskets from Ciara Garcia for the Lady Jays, the score was 8-9 at halftime with the Vikings with the lead.

The third quarter, the Lady Jays allowed Columbus Lakeview to score four points and managed none of their own, and in the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays matched the Vikings’ efforts with seven points for each team. Garcia scored six points, having two baskets and making two free-throws. Isabelle Skrdla made one free-throw. Despite their efforts, the Lady Jays fell 15-20.

Coach Brenda Fleece said, “I was really proud of the girls and how hard we worked. The first game showed us what we did well and what we need to work on for the next game.”

The next junior high girls’ game will be Monday, November 26, at Battle Creek.
