Lady Jays Volleyball

VB Wins Pierce County Tournament

The varsity volleyball team played the Osmond Tigers and the Randolph Cardinals Thursday, October 11 at Osmond. The Lady Jays won both games.

In the Osmond game the Lady Jays started out strong 25-12. The Lady Jays kept their momentum and won the second set 25-14.

Senior Maggie Brahmer led the Lady Jays in attacking with six, followed by senior Rhayna Waldner with five. Brahmer led the team in serving aces with four, and close behind was sophomore Kenzie Moeller with three. Again, Brahmer led the Lady Jays in blocking with a total of three. Moeller led the team in digging with three, and close behind was Brahmer and sophomore Faith Lubischer with two. Senior Kayla Simmons led the team with eighteen assists.

Later that night, the Lady Jays took on the Randolph Cardinals in the championship game. The Lady Jays started out strong 25-14. The momentum from the first set carried to the second set and the Lady Jays won 25-19.

Brahmer led the team in attacking with thirteen. Brahmer also led the team in serving aces with two. Senior Katrina Meier led the team in blocking with one. Waldner, Lubischer, and senior Marie Stone led the Lady Jays in digging with three. Again, Simmons led the team with eighteen assists.

Coach Brittany Weber said, “We played really well. We hit our zones aggressively with the serve, and our serve receive was great. If we can continue to excel in those areas, we will continue to have success. No game on our schedule the rest of the way will be easy, so we need to make sure we stay focused in practice and focus on our goals every single day.”

The Lady Jays’ next game will be Thursday, October 18 at home against Columbus Scotus. They will be in action in the Mid State Conference tournament beginning Monday, October 22.


Lady Jays Win Dig Pink Game

The varsity volleyball girls played Guardian Angels Central Catholic Blue Jays on Tuesday, October 9 at home. The Lady Jays got the win in 4 sets with set scores, 3-1.  

Pierce finished the first set with 25-23. Again, the Lady Jays got the win with the same score, 25-23 in the second set. The Lady Jays lost momentum in the third set, 22-25. Pierce then found determination and found the momentum they had in the first and second sets and won the fourth set, 25-22.

Senior Maggie Brahmer led the Lady Jays in attacking with twenty-eight kills; senior Rhayna Waldner killed ten. Sophomore Faith Lubischer led the team in serving aces with three. Brahmer also led the team in blocking with five, and Waldner blocked two. Brahmer led with seventeen digs, and senior Marie Stone had fourteen. Senior Kayla Simmons led the team with forty assists.

Coach Brittany Weber said, “I liked our approach to this game. Finishing sets has been a real problem for us this year, but we found a way to stay aggressive and close them out at the end. We also continue to see improvement defensively. We made hustle plays at critical moments, which won us the game. We need to continue to have that improvement mindset as we enter the conference and district tournaments.”

The varsity volleyball team will take on the Scotus Shamrocks and celebrate parents’ night on Thursday, October 18 at home starting at 5 p.m.


JV Volleyball Falls in Dig Pink Game

The JV volleyball team played GACC for their dig pink game on Tuesday, October 9, at home and lost in three sets.

In the first set, the Lady Jays barely lost 21-25.  The Lady Jays came back to win the second set 25-15. In the final set, the Lady Jays fell short finishing 10-15.

Coach Zach Weber said “We fought hard and did a lot of things really well, but we shoot ourselves in the foot when we can’t serve. We had eight service errors in the first set alone, and we still found a way to be competitive.”

The next JV volleyball game will be on Thursday, October 18, for parents night where they play Scotus.


Freshman Volleyball Plays GACC

The freshman Lady Jays played on the home court for the dig pink game against GACC on Tuesday, October 9. The the final match score was 0-2.

In the first set the final was 21-25 with the Lady Jays only a little behind. The second set was even closer, but just a little short for the Lady Jays with the final of 23-25. In the first set McKenna Shonka and Alexis Schnoor had serving runs of three points. Also Gina Wragge with had a four serving run for the Lady Jays. In the second set Larissa Meier had a three serving run for the freshman.

Some positives commented by Coach Krista Meyer, "We had girls hustling after the ball left and right which is always what I want to see as a coach. Also, I thought our serving was great and we got them out of system quite a few times." Also said by Coach Meyer, "Overall, we played alright. We started out on top again but let them creep back up on us and go on runs that were way too long. Our defensive effort is always there though!"

The next game for the Lady Jays is Thursday, October 18  against Columbus Scotus which is parents night for the Lady Jays.
