Lady Jays Slide into First Game of Season

The Pierce Lady Jays softball team lost their season opener to NEN on Thursday, August 16, at Pender with a final score of 0-8.
Leading in the first inning was NEN with one run, while the Lady Jays did not score. During the second, third, and fourth inning it was quiet with no runs scored by either team. When the fifth inning came around, NEN upped their score with two more runs and held the Lady Jays again to no runs. In the sixth inning, NEN brought in five more runs and again held the Lady Jays, leaving Pierce with zero runs.
The Pierce Lady Jays had three hits throughout the game from senior Kiley Bierman, sophomore Elizabeth Hammer, and junior Angelica Volquardsen. Pitching for the Lady Jays was Kaylee Dvorak with two strikeouts against NEN.
Defensively, leading the Lady Jays with five putouts was sophomore Mikala Stone. The most assists was three from sophomore Elizabeth Hammer.
Coach Marika VonSeggern said, “Despite what the score said, we played a really great first game. The girls did some really great things, and I'm looking forward to getting back to practice to work on the things we can fix. ”
The Lady Jays’ next game is Tuesday, August 28, against West Point on the Pierce home field.
