Lady Jays Subdistrict Basketball

Lady Jays Defeat Blue Devils

The varsity girls’ basketball team traveled to Norfolk Public on Thursday, February 15, to take down the Wayne Blue Devils in their subdistrict final game. The Lady Jays took the win with a score of 47-39.

During the first quarter, the Lady Jays battled back and forth as both teams put up ten points. Starting off the game was Carly Sutherland with a two-point shot, followed by Maggie Brahmer with a free throw. Sutherland then put in a two-point shot and a free throw, followed by Brianna Aguilera with a two-point shot, and Brahmer with a two-point shot.

The Lady Jays picked up the pace in the second quarter, scoring 17 and holding the Blue Devils to 13. Scoring in this quarter were Sidney Zimmerer with two free throws, Aguilera with two three-point shots, Sutherland with two two-point shots, Zimmerer with a three-point shot, and Sutherland with another two-point shot to finish off the quarter. Going into halftime, the score was 27-23.

Coming out of halftime, the Lady Jays kept up the momentum, scoring nine and holding the Blue Devils to seven. Scoring in this quarter were Sutherland with a free throw, Brahmer with two two-point shots, Aguilera with a two-point shot, and Brenna Collison with a two-point shot.

During the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays finished the game strong, scoring 11 and holding the Blue Devils to nine. Scoring in this quarter were Aguilera with a two-point shot, Sutherland with two two-point shots and a free throw, Collison with a two-point shot, and Kayla Simmons with two free throws. The Lady Jays took the win from the Blue Devils with a score of 47-39.

Leading the team in points were Sutherland with 17, Aguilera with 12, and Brahmer with seven. Leading in rebounds were Brahmer with 12, Sutherland with eight, and Simmons and Zimmerer each with four. Leading in assists were Simmons with five, Brahmer with three, and Aguilera and Zimmerer each with two.

“We were able to handle their pressure and keep our composure for most of the game,” coach Darren Sindelar said. “Everyone that played contributed to the win. I thought Brianna Aguilera was a huge spark for us coming off the bench.”

The Lady Jays will advance to the district final game on Friday, February 23, at the Columbus Community College at 7 p.m.


Varsity Lady Jays Fly Over Indians

The varsity Lady Jays traveled to Norfolk on Tuesday, February 13, to take on the Winnebago Indians in their first round of subdistricts. The Lady Jays took the win with a score of 62-49.

The Lady Jays started off the first quarter scoring nine and allowing Winnebago to score ten. Starting off the game was Maggie Brahmer with a two-point shot, followed by Brenna Collison with a two-point shot. Adding to that were Collison with another two-point shot and Brahmer with a free throw and a two-point shot.

The Lady Jays picked up the momentum in the second quarter, scoring 15 and holding Winnebago to nine. Scoring in this quarter were Brianna Aguilera with a free throw, Carly Sutherland with a free throw and a two-point shot, Kenzie Moeller with two free throws, Brahmer with a two-point shot, Sutherland with a two-point shot, Sidney Zimmerer with a three-point shot, and Brahmer with two free throws. Going into halftime, the score was 24-19.

Coming out of halftime, the Lady Jays kept up the tempo, scoring 19 and holding Winnebago to ten. Scoring in this quarter were Zimmerer with a three-point shot, Collison with a two-point shot, Brahmer with two two-point shots, and Sutherland with a two-point shot. Brahmer then put up another two-point shot, followed by Zimmerer and Aguilera each with a three-pointer.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays scored 19 and allowed Winnebago to score 20. Scoring in this quarter were Sutherland with a two-point shot, Brahmer with two free throws, Sutherland with a two-point shot and nine free throws, Brahmer with two free throws, and Sutherland topping off the quarter with two more free throws. The Lady Jays took the win with a score of 62-49.

Leading the team in points was Sutherland with 22, followed by Brahmer with 19, and Zimmerer with nine. Leading in rebounds were Brahmer with 17, Sutherland with nine, and Collison with eight. And leading in assists was Sutherland with five, Brahmer with four, and Kayla Simmons with three.

“Winnebago was a physical team,” said coach Darren Sindelar. “They shoot the ball from all over the place. It was hard to cover all their shooters, but the girls responded and did the best they could. I thought the effort was there the whole game.”

The Lady Jays advanced to the subdistrict finals, played on Thursday, February 15, at Norfolk High against Wayne.
