Lady Jays Basketball

Lady Jays Defeat Blue Devils

 

The varsity Lady Jays hosted the Wayne Blue Devils on Friday, January 5. Pierce came out on top 41-34.

The Lady Jays established their lead right out of the gate in the first quarter, outscoring the Blue Devils 17-12. Aiding the Lady Jays’ efforts were Sidney Zimmerer with a basket and two free throws, Maggie Brahmer with three buckets, Brianna Aguilera with a shot from behind the arc, and Brenna Collison and Carly Sutherland each with a two-point shot.

The second quarter was low-scoring all around, as the Lady Jays put up seven points and held the Blue Devils to four. Kayla Simmons contributed a three, and Collison and Brahmer added a bucket apiece. Going into halftime, the Lady Jays had a lead of 24-16.

The Lady Jays maintained their lead in the third quarter, putting up 12 points and keeping the Blue Devils to 11. Sutherland had six points for the Lady Jays, Brahmer had four, and Zimmerer had two.

In the final quarter, Brahmer sank two more buckets for the Lady Jays, and Aguilera added a free throw. Although the Blue Devils outscored the Lady Jays in the fourth quarter 5-7, the Lady Jays were still able to come away with the victory.

Leading the Lady Jays in scoring was Brahmer with 16 points. Brahmer also had seven rebounds. Sutherland led in assists with seven, and Brahmer and Sutherland each tallied two steals. Sutherland and Aguilera each had a block.

The Lady Jays’ next game will be Thursday, January 11, against the St. Francis Flyers in Humphrey.


Lady Jays Lose to Monarchs

 

The varsity Lady Jays’ basketball team traveled to David City to play the Aquinas Monarchs on Tuesday, January 2. The Lady Jays lost the contest 37-49.

The Lady Jays started off the game by scoring ten points with Carly Sutherland contributing three buckets, Kayla Simmons adding a pair of free throws, and Maggie Brahmer sinking a basket for two. The Monarchs, however, edged them out by scoring 13 points in the first. Aquinas extended their lead in the second as they held the Lady Jays to six points and put up 11 of their own. Sutherland was the lone scorer for Pierce this quarter with four free throws and a basket. This left the score going into halftime at 16-24 with Pierce behind.

Coming out of halftime, the Lady Jays managed ten more points as Sutherland sank three buckets and Brahmer contributed two, but the Monarchs put up a whopping 18 points to maintain a strong lead over the Lady Jays. Pierce outscored the Monarchs 11-7 in the fourth quarter with a three from Sidney Zimmerer, a bucket apiece from Brenna Collison and Sutherland, and two baskets from Brahmer, but the deficit was too much to overcome, and the Lady Jays were sent home with a loss of 37-49.

The Lady Jays will host Hartington CC on Friday, January 12, for their next contest.


JV Lady Jays Go Neck-and-Neck with Blue Devils

A last-quarter battle allowed the JV Lady Jays to edge out the Wayne Blue Devils in a home game on Friday, January 5, with a final score of 41-39.

The JV team started the game on the right foot, scoring a total of 16 points in the first quarter. Wayne’s defense couldn’t contain Pierce’s offense as Brianna Aguilera put up four points, Zoe Brenden contributed six points including two free throws, and Kenzie Moeller put six points on the scoreboard for the Lady Jays.

Turning the tables in the second, Wayne outscored the Lady Jays 6-17. Points came from Brenden scoring four and Faith Lubischer contributing two. The score was tied 22-22 going into the half.

Although their defense could not hold the Blue Devils at the start of the second half, the Lady Jays managed to add a total of eight points to the board. Marie Stone scored two points, Moeller contributed two free throws, and Lubischer put up four points including two free throws. The score was 30-34 at the end of the third quarter with the Lady Jays trailing.

Throughout the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays found their way through Wayne’s defense, adding 11 points to the books and ultimately overcoming Wayne’s defensive efforts. Brenden had six points including two free throws, Lubischer contributed two free throw shots, and Moeller sank a three-pointer to seal the win over the Blue Devils.

The JV Lady Jays will hit the road for their next competition against Humphrey St. Francis on Thursday, January 11.


JV Lady Jays Battle Monarchs

The JV Lady Jays played the Aquinas Monarchs on Tuesday, January 2, in David City. Not being able to take down the Monarchs, the Lady Jays fell 12-36.

In the first quarter, the Lady Jays scored two points from Zoe Brenden. The Monarchs were able to score ten points against the Lady Jays’ defense to take command of the game early.

In the second quarter, the Lady Jays still struggled on the offensive end, but improved on the defensive end. The JV Lady Jays scored three points this quarter with Brenden making a free throw and Marie Stone putting in a two-point shot. Holding Aquinas to only five points, the score was 5-15 heading into halftime.

Coming out of halftime, the Lady Jays put up five points. Brianna Aguilera made a shot for two and a free throw, and Kenzie Moeller put in a free throw. Allowing the Monarchs to score nine points, the Lady Jays trailed 10-24 heading into the final quarter of the game.

The Lady Jays struggled in the fourth quarter and scored just two points from Brenden and Moeller each making a free throw. Not keeping the momentum on the defensive end, the Lady Jays allowed Aquinas to score 12 points. The final score of the game was 12-36.

The JV Lady Jays next game will be held at Humphrey Saint Francis on Thursday, January 11.


F-S Lady Jays Defeat Lakeview

Pierce’s freshman-sophomore girls’ basketball team traveled to Columbus to take on the Lakeview Viqueens on Saturday, January 6. The Lady Jays came home with a victory of 54-21.

The first quarter saw the Lady Jays take control of the game, outscoring the Viqueens 14-6. Contributing to the Lady Jays’ total this quarter were Mikayla Stone with a basket and two free throws, Faith Lubischer with a basket, Hailey Abler with one free throw, Abigail Meier with three two-pointers, and Zoe Brenden with one free throw.

The Lady Jays continued to dominate in the second quarter, keeping the Viqueens to just two points and racking up 18 courtesy of a three from Lubischer, two free throws from Abler, a free throw and a basket from Meier, a free throw and a basket from Brenden, and three buckets and a free throw from Kenzie Moeller. The Lady Jays led Lakeview 32-8 going into the half.

The third quarter was quieter for the Lady Jays on offense, as they put up five points and allowed eight. Abler and Moeller each added another basket, and Meier contributed a shot from the charity stripe.

To seal their victory, the Lady Jays scored 17 points and held the Viqueens to five. Stone, Abler, Brenden, and Moeller all added points to aid the Lady Jays’ efforts. The Lady Jays end the game on top of Lakeview 54 to 21.

“We started the game really aggressive and gave good on ball pressure,” said coach Amber Engler. “We got many steals and layups to help give us a lead and keep it.“

The freshman-sophomore Lady Jays’ next games will be played in a tournament Saturday, January 13, at Plainview.
