PHS Students Attend County Government Day

by Morgan Crist

Mrs. Brenda Fleecs’s American Government class attended County Government Day at the Pierce County Court house on Wednesday, November 15.

Fifteen of the Mrs. Fleec’s government class took a tour of the court house and learned about all of the offices there. The day was also meant to give the students a better understanding of local government.

During the day, students attended a special presentation about the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. that was taken by Vietnam veterans to visit the memorial as a thank-you for their service. The rest of the day’s activities included a showing of Nebraska County Government, as well as group tours of the court house. Students also had the opportunity to experience a texting-and-driving simulator. Ending the day was a luncheon held with all of the courthouse employees and officials in attendance as well as the Legion commanders and Auxiliary presidents.

The attending students and their offices were as follows: Wyatt Neitzke as Clerk of the District Court; Cody Fuchs as County Court and Clerk Magistrate; Brianna Furstenau as County Assessor, Valyn Kirkpatrick as County Clerk, Ex-Officio Reg. of Deeds, and Election Commissioner and Supt. of School; Courtney Yawn as County Commissioner; Hannah McCrady as County Extension/Educator; Dawson Weber as County Sheriff; Alex Kesting as County Treasurer; Jaden Gleason as County Planning and Zoning Administrator; Samantha Hartman as Health and Human Services; and Matthew Williams as Veteran Service Officer. A smaller group of students had offices outside of the courthouse, which included Caitlyn Crist as County Attorney, Tyler Unseld as Farm Service Agency, and Collin Tinker as National Resource Conservation Service.

Mrs. Fleecs said of the experience, “They’re (the students) seeing people holding these offices and the opportunities that they have within their community.”
