Volleyball Sets Up a New Season

by Kayla Simmons

On Tuesday, August 8, the Pierce High girls’ volleyball team served their way into the 2017 season with practice to ready themselves for their first games of the fall.

Staying busy all through July, the team came together for several camps, summer league games, and weightlifting with head coach Brittany Weber and assistant coaches Zach Weber and Krista Meyer.

“This summer, we have been focusing on the fundamentals of each position,” said coach Brittany Weber. “We have a lot of new faces in our lineups, and it’s important that we build a solid foundation with our basic skills.”

Returning back this fall season, the Lady Jays will step on the court with 29 girls on the team, including six returning letter winners: Carly Sutherland, Sidney Zimmerer, Meredith Fasse, Maggie Brahmer, and Rhayna Waldner.

“I feel really good about what we have coming,” said Brittany Weber. “We have a lot of talent on our team, and I look forward to seeing how all of the pieces fit together.

Having a few weeks before their first official match, the Lady Jays are hitting their volleyball skills hard as they will face the Norfolk Catholic Knights on Thursday, August 31, at Norfolk beginning at 5:30 p.m. However, the Lady Jays will be in action on Thursday, August 17, in a scrimmage against Columbus High in Columbus at 5:00.
