Pierce Speech Team Starts Season

The Pierce speech team held its annual invitational tournament on Saturday, January 14, to kick off their competition season. The JV speech team placed 2nd in their division out of 22 teams, and the varsity speech team placed 3rd out of 22..
Individually, eight people placed total for the Pierce JV team. They were Katrina Meier placing 1st in Informative, Sydney Erickson 5th in Informative, Kiley Bierman 1st and Meier 2nd in Extemporaneous, Emilia Goetsch 3rd and Maiya Baumann 5th in Humorous Prose, Samantha Hartman 6th in Poetry, and the OID team consisting of Elizabeth Harris, Bierman, Sydney Slater, and Halle Ross 5th.
For the varsity, Junior Aguilar placed 1st and Shianna Oestreich 4th in Persuasive Speaking, Chancey White placed 3rd in Entertainment, the duo of Bryce Bierman and Derek Ross placed 4th in Duet Acting, Aguilar placed 4th in Extemp, and the OID team consisting of Breane Hoffman, Oestreich, Emily Simmons, and Aguilar placed 4th.
The speech coach Melissa Legate thought that, for the first meet, there were some strong pieces. She said, “There’s a lot of room for growth and a great deal of potential. I think it will be a good season, and I’m looking forward to the rest of it.”
The next speech meet will be Saturday, January 21, at Boone Central.
