Academic Celebration Held

PHS Celebrates Academic Awards

After a successful school year, Pierce High School honored many of its students in their annual Academic Awards Assembly on Tuesday, May 19.

Mrs. Crys Bauermeister first recognized the high school and junior high students who had participated in quiz bowl during the year, as well as students who represented PHS at the Northeast Academic Contest, where Pierce took home first place.

Mr. Les Piper and Ms. Kendra Aldag then recognized many seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students for achievements in the science classroom.

Mrs. Mary Birch, Mrs. Krista Bailey, and Mrs Shelly Adams then gave awards to the high school and junior high students who had given their time as peer tutors throughout the school year, recognizing how much dedication it took for them to be willing to give up their study hall time to assist their fellow students with their academics.

The math and science awards were next. They were presented by Mrs. Deb Koehlmoos, Mr. Grant Doerr, and Mrs. Melinda Stelling. The top junior and senior for math and science were recognized, and they were Ethan Hanson and Matthew Penne. Koehlmoos then announced the names of all students who had achieved a MAP test score of 230 or higher on the science section of the test; those students got to sign the “wall of fame” in her classroom.

Activities director Mr. Johnnie Ostermeyer then recognized all students who had earned academic all-conference and all-state awards throughout the year.

The robotics team was also given awards by their sponsor, Mrs. Treva Dostal, and their accomplishments at their competitions throughout the year were celebrated.

Mr. Greg Warneke then announced the students who had competed in and placed during the Nebraska Finance Challenge earlier in the school year.

Students with achievements in reading were also given awards. The student with the most books read this year was Sara Pedersen, who had checked out 177 books from the library during the school year.

The final students to be recognized were those with cumulative GPA’s of 3.5 or higher in grades seven through twelve.

Principal Mark Brahmer then closed the awards ceremony, thanking the student body for their work during the school year.

A talent show followed with acts ranging from singing and playing instruments to presenting a video made by several students on “Expectations vs. Reality” when it came to being a freshman.
