Six Compete in State Journalism Championships

Six Compete in State Journalism Championships

 

Pierce High journalism students who qualified for the NSAA State Journalism Championships competed in their respective events on Monday, April 27, at Northeast Community College. Pierce had six placers.

Placing in Yearbook Theme Development was the team of Kelsi Svendsen, Krystina Schuett, and Amanda Hammer. The team placed 6th with their yearbook spread; they were challenged to create a yearbook spread to fit the NSAA-provided theme “Inclusion” and do so in 45 minutes.

Emily Simmons placed 5th in her event Yearbook Sports Feature Writing. She was given information and a topic for their feature writing and had to complete it in 45 minutes, as well. Also competing in this event was Shianna Oestreich.

Finally, Alexander Retzlaff competed in Sports News Writing and placed 5th The NSAA gave the competitors an information sheet about a soccer game, and they had to craft news stories reporting it in 45 minutes.

“It was wonderful to see these students recognized for the talent they have and the hard work they put into journalism all year,” said journalism advisor Melissa Legate. “I was very proud of the way they showcased their abilities and represented our journalism program.”
