FCCLA Members Get a Glimpse of Leadership

FCCLA Members Get A Glimpse of Leadership
by Alyson Garcia

From Sunday, April 12, through Tuesday, April 14, many members and officers from PHS’s FCCLA chapter attended the State Leadership Conference in Lincoln. A total of 19 members and three chaperones traveled down to Lincoln to gain valuable leadership skills and compete in the FCCLA STAR events.

Eight students competed in the STAR events. These students were Breane Hoffman and Leslie Dohmen, who received silver medals in the National Programs in Action Event; Elizabeth Harris and Kiley Bierman, who earned silver medals in the Food Innovation event; and Stephanie Rinkel and Ashley Pedersen, who competed in the Focus on Children event. Earning a bronze medal was Mariah West in the Community Service portfolio event.

Senior Tristen Sell, who is now advancing onto Nationals in Washington D.C. in June this year, received top gold in her Teach and Train event. Sell said, “My first state FCCLA conference was an unforgettable experience. I loved being a part of our chapter, and I’m thrilled to represent our school and our state at nationals this summer.”

When members weren’t competing in STAR events, they were attending sessions to help build leadership skills and meet new friends from other Nebraska chapters. Some sessions that the students attended were Leadership 101 presented by National First Vice President Sara Smith and an inspirational lecture presented by the leader of the organization Nicolace Speaks. In these sessions, members learned how to become strong young leaders and how to stand up for what’s right even when no one else is.

The next FCCLA event will be an all-member meeting on April 24 for the end of the year banquet, which features dinner and the installation of the 2015-2016 officer team.
