Guest Speaker Visits 4th Grade

The 4th grade students recently finished a unit in which they studied the Native Americans of early Nebraska.  Seven major tribes of native people were studied: Araphao, Cheyenne, Omaha, Oto-Missouri, Pawnee, Ponca, and Lakota.  Students learned about the lifestyles of these Plains Indians and how they lived similarly and differently from the way we live now.

A special guest speaker in December was Jenn Fritz, mother of 4th grade student, Colton Fritz. Mrs. Fritz is an ancestor of the Kaw tribe, a Native American tribe which originated in Kansas.  She spoke to the students about the history of the Kaw tribe and how this tribe lived much like the farming tribes which the students had studied. Mrs. Fritz also told the students about Charles Curtis, a famous Kaw tribal member who served as Vice-President of the Unites States under President Herbert Hoover. Mrs. Fritz noted that many of the remaining ancestors of the Kaw nation now reside on a reservation in north-central Oklahoma.
