Buddy Baseball: more than just a game
by Eleanor Bauermeister
The Pierce High softball team spent their morning and early afternoon on Saturday, August 8, at Ta-Ha Zouka Park in Norfolk, helping people with disabilities play baseball as a form of team bonding. There were three games played, and softball team members helped at each one.
“It helped us think about how lucky we are and how easy our lives can be compared to some other people in our world,” coach Ryan Ohnoutka says when asked about what impact Buddy Baseball made on the softball team.
During Buddy Baseball, softball team members were paired up with a buddy to help them play, cheer them on, and get to know each other throughout the game.
“I didn’t quite know what it was going to be like, but it was a lot more fun than I had expected it to be,” senior Evelyn Skrdla says.
The softball team truly appreciated the opportunity to serve the community and hopes to be back soon to help at more games.
