Building Potential for Pierce Volleyball
By Josie Painter
After a disappointing loss in the district final game last year, the Pierce High volleyball team is ready for a redemption season, and as new players, new coaches, and veterans from last year’s team combine their talents, their season looks promising.
The team did graduate several key players from last year, but several more were added. Kyndal Werner, a junior, and Kayton Werner, a sophomore, joined the roster from Elkhorn Valley and, along with many other players who have been stepping up in practice, will be critical to the team's success.
“I think I can bring lots of energy and smiles,” Ky. Werner said. She did note, though, that as she transitions from setter to outside hitter, her biggest challenge has been “learning a completely new position and holding myself back from tackling Adrienne [the current setter] because my natural instinct is to get the second ball.”
New coaches this year include Katie Brummels and Kylie Freeman, both of whom have experience coaching and playing volleyball.
Additionally, many players in the varsity rotation will be returning, including Adrienne Riggert, Nora Herian, Josie Painter, Lydia Cone, and Haley Scholting, who is unfortunately out with a torn ACL.
“This is definitely one of my most talented, if not the most talented, groups I've had. So goals are very high in the short term,” head coach Zach Weber stated.
Pierce High volleyball has the potential to be great, and they would appreciate their community coming to support them as they make this season their best one yet. Their first game is Thursday, August 27 at Stanton.
