Music Department Hosts Pre Contest Recital

By Jax Bauer

The band students have been putting in the work to compete at the district music contest which will be held April 25.

Band director Michael Sindt has helped put together many small groups of his students to practice and perform songs at the district music contest. These students consist of Lillian Blank, Trinity Christiansen, Jayna Prochaska, Makayla Shefl, Dixie Band, Jared Northcutt and Brayden Passyka, Spencer Sindt, Carter Sindt, Brooke Wortman, Brass Quintet, Low Brass Ensemble, Mya Johnson and Shefl, Flute/Clarinet Quintet, Christian Nordby, M. Johnson, Aubrie Zimmerman, Avery Wragge, and the Percussion Ensemble.

The Pierce concert choir also presented their small group pieces they planned to compete with at the district music contest along with vocal solos from Addison Frye, Savannah Lingenfelter and Brayden Passyka, and duets from Lingenfelter and Tyler Oliveira and Frye and S. Sindt.

Band director Sindt has always had his students on their toes and has had them prepared to be able to perform well at these types of events.

“I try to meet with each small group a few times to give them some musical direction, and then they are mostly on their own after that. With the soloists I also try to meet with them individually a few times and they must practice with the accompaniment (Mrs. Luhr) a number of times.  Obviously, everyone is responsible for learning their part to the best of their ability on their own when possible. We also have our Pre Contest Recital that gives the soloists and small groups a public performance before the District Music Contest. With the concert band, we not only work on the basic notes and rhythms, but we try to add the extra musical nuances that make music engaging such as phrasing, rhythmic groove, dynamics, articulation, the direction of the music, and overall emotion.  This gives our performance a chance to be aesthetically pleasing to both the listener and performers,” M. Sindt says.
