Pierce High Girls Compete in Powderpuff

By Abbie Cone

One of the most fun-loved activities sponsored by the student council is powderpuff, which was held during homecoming week.

Powderpuff is a great opportunity for high school students to create memories and have a little bit of a competitive edge in a sport they would not normally play. Girls have the chance to play a game of football, and boys can compete in a volleyball game.

The powderpuff football game was held on Wednesday, September 10, right after the early dismissal from school. Seniors and sophomores joined together to form a team, and juniors and freshmen were a team nicknamed “Shrekalicious.” Seniors and sophomores took the win, beating Shrekalicious 38-32.

“My favorite part of powderpuff was playing a sport I wasn't used to playing each day, and also the mask I made out of eyeblack,” junior Nora Herian remarks. “The best part of the game is definitely the competitiveness of the two teams, which makes it really entertaining.”

Coaches for Shrekalicious were Brenden Bolling and Brock Collison. Ryder Theisen and Jax Bauer coached the seniors and sophomores, and Hayden Bauer, Colter Anderson, and Christian Nordby refereed and kept the game as “safe” as possible.

“I enjoyed arguing with the coaches and making sure everyone was following the rules, and I was surprised by how heated the game got,” Anderson remarked about the experience.

At one point during the game, seniors and sophomores were up by 15 and the game seemed to be in their hands. However, Shrekalicious was not ready to give up and made two back-to-back interceptions, scored, and completed their 2-point conversions. The score was then 32-31, with Shrekalicious in the lead.

With the game on the line, the seniors and sophomores needed to score to win the game. After a timeout called by their coaches to attempt to explain a play for the girls to run, both teams returned to the line on fourth down. Aislyn Moeller came in clutch and ran the ball into the end zone, securing the victory for the seniors and sophomores.

“Running Mustang [a play drawn up by their coaches] was my favorite part of the game. I was definitely surprised how the other team caught up, that’s for sure. Our coaches were pretty great, and a lot of fun, too,” Moeller comments.

Overall, the experience for the girls was an hour filled with fun, laughter, a little bit of a competitive fire, but most importantly, everyone stayed safe.

The powderpuff volleyball game will be played on 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 27.
