Pierce Choir Performs at District Music Contest

By Brianna Rundell

Pierce High Choir attended the district music contest for a day long competition at Norfolk High School. The choir prepared six solos, two duets, and two concert choir songs.

The first song for the concert choir was Ubi Caritas, a slower song to balance out the intensity of the second song, called Dance. The first song included a flute solo played by Mya Johnson, which added a perfect touch to the song. Dance was a more upbeat song. Not only was it acapella, it included a 3-part percussion near the end.

Pierce choir received one rating from all three judges and earned a superior rating at the contest.

“The whole day went very smoothly. I was very proud of everyone's accomplishments. When you walk away from the day with six superiors and three excellent ratings, I can't be disappointed in the least. Judges always comment on what can be changed, fixed and what you did well on. So even though we may not be able to fix them for the current songs, you can apply the comments to future songs. A group can get a superior rating from the judges in two different ways. First, two judges can give 1's and one judge can give a 2, and you get an overall score of a superior (1). And second, you can get straight 1's from all three judges, which is what the Pierce choir has done the last two years. It's icing on the cake. Getting straight 1's means you also get a plaque to hang up. I can give direction and show and/or tell them how I want the songs to sound like, but they are the ones who truly have to do it, and they have come through these last two years. I am truly blessed to work with these kids because their dedication and hard work pays off in the end,” choir director Amy Barnhill said.

Hadleigh Collison, Zoey Ebmeier, Addison Frye, Makenna Wachholtz, Cameron Wessendorf, and Brayden Passyka performed solos at DMC.

Two duets were performed by Frye/Spencer Sindt and Ebmeier/Brianna Rundell.

The group overall had an amazing day by earning one and two ratings. One ratings are labeled as “superior” and two ratings are “excellent”.

“It feels amazing, especially for how hard we have been working for it this season and especially since I’m a senior, great way to go,” commented Ebmeier.

Pierce choir will perform next for a community concert on May 5.
