Pierce Competes at District Music Contest

By Elizabeth Furstenau

The Pierce High band is not one to take for granted. Michael Sindt's technique for directing his band is one that no one can master. His directing talent is shown through the power of the band students and their instruments. Friday, April 25, this was implemented at the District Music Contest held at the Johnny Carson Theater.

The performances included concert band, jazz band, and small group performances. The concert band performed two songs: “Choreography” by Robert Sheldon and “The Lamb” by Philip Sousa. They received a 1 rating for each song, ultimately giving them a superior.

The jazz band received a 1 rating across the board as well.

Trayton Christiansen earned a 1 for his trumpet solo.

Makayla Shefl had a flute solo and scored a 1.

Jayna Prochaska had an alto saxophone solo and earned a 1.

A 1 was given to Spencer Sindt who played a trombone solo.

Zoey Ebmeier and Mya Johnson also had a flute solo each. Z Ebmeier earned a 1 and Johnson received a 1+.

Lillian Blank had a clarinet solo, receiving a 1, as well as Aubrie Zimmerman who also received a 1.

Hadleigh Collison, Z. Ebmeier, and Johnson played a flute trio and received a 1.

“It was kinda bittersweet thinking of it as my last contest, but I thought my final performances went great,” Collison states. “Getting all superiors is hard to do, especially with some of the judges, but we accomplished that and I’m happy my last DMC was successful.”

Collison also had a piano solo giving her a score of 2.

Amelia Ahlers and Prochaska performed a saxophone duet, receiving a 1.

Ahlers, Blank, and Shefl worked to play a woodwind trio, and it paid off as they received a 1.

“I am very proud of our Pierce Bluejay Band, they showed tenacity in their preparation as they played some challenging music at a high level while many of them were very busy elsewhere with other activities and classes,” M. Sindt claims. “The attainment of preparing and performing with exceptional musical nuance is a skill that these young people can use the rest of their life.  I would like to give a special shout out to our 10 special seniors who were an active part of the Bluejay band as performers and leaders to their last semester!”
