Pierce Quiz Bowl Battles at NECC

By Chloe Bernhardt

On Wednesday, April 10, the Pierce High quiz bowl team traveled to Norfolk to compete in the Northeast Community College quiz bowl.

The team consists of seniors, Travis Emory, Emma Risinger, Brayden Kuper; junior, Aubrey Hanson, and sophomore, Abigail Cone.

“I’m proud of how we competed on Wednesday,” Kuper states. “We did much better than we usually do at Northeast and made it to the semifinals. It’s a tough competition because lots of those teams there have actual practice while we rely on just what we know. Overall I’m proud of our team and can’t wait for the conference quiz bowl.”

In the first game, Pierce took on Wisner-Pilger. At first, Wisner-Pilger scored to lead 15-0. Both teams scored to tie it up 20. Pierce kept scoring, but so did Wisner-Pilger. The score was now 40-30 and Pierce was winning. This game ended 45-30 in Pierce’s favor.

The next game, Pierce went against Plainview. Pierce scored first, to take a 5-0 lead. In the next round Pierce scored 15 more points, making it 20-0. Plainview started to score, making the total 20-5. Pierce gained 15 points, but the opponents gained five. Both teams scored again, making the outcome 45-10. The final score of the Plainview versus Pierce round was 50-10.

In the third game, which was the semifinals, Pierce faced Norfolk Catholic. Pierce did not end up with the outcome they were hoping for, but they still put their brains to the test.

The last match of the day for Pierce, the team ended up facing Howells-Dodge, and after 10 questions both teams were tied at 20 each. It took five sudden death questions, but even though Pierce fought hard, they did not win.

Cone says, “I think we competed a lot better than we did in the last quiz bowl. I think the questions were easier so that helped too, but overall I’d say we were just quicker to the buzzer.”
