Students Seek Out the Soil

By Ella Gaes

On Wednesday, October 12, 25 students from Pierce High School participated in the 2022 FFA Region 5 Land Judging competition held west of Tilden. Students from different grade levels have spent lots of time practicing and preparing, which led Pierce to be very successful.

Roughly 135 teams, with more than 600 students competing, were at the event.

Brielle Unseld was the highest placing individual from Pierce, earning seventh place.

Unseld commented, “Even though it was freezing and windy, we just went in with a competitive mindset and wanted to do our best to show what we can do.”

Pierce’s top placing team, which included Unseld, Ashton Koch, Haiden Magnussen, and Alexander Meier, placed fourth and earned a spot to the state contest in Scottsbluff.

FFA sponsor, Mr. Matt Neal commented, “I thought it was a very unique contest, and they hosted it in a really good area that presented some new challenges compared to land judging competitions in the past. I am really happy with our senior team placing fourth. It is a really big achievement to even place in the top twenty in the region 5 land judging contest.”

Land judging is an annual competition where students compete individually and on teams. This competition enables each participant to learn how to recognize the physical features of the soil, determine land capability for crop production, and evaluate management practices needed for proper stewardship.
