Pierce Marching Band Holds Festival

By Ella Gaes

On Wednesday, October 5, Pierce High School was the hotspot for surrounding schools competing in the 2022 Pierce Marching Contest. These schools included Creighton, Crofton, David City, O’Neill, Wayne, and Schuyler. Pierce High students look forward to this annual contest because the whole school gets to leave school and participate in supporting our band.

Senior Kaley Johnson says, “Performance wise, this year is going extremely well. We have definitely been more prepared for the competitions this year compared to any other year I’ve been involved. Although the senior class of band is small this year, Nik and I are exceptional leaders as well as the other underclassmen who have stepped up to fill those positions.”

The overall trophy is only awarded to the traveling bands. It is a tradition that the host band plays and only gets a rating. Crofton was the winner of the overall award. Receiving a I is a superior rating and a II is excellent. All schools received a superior except for Creighton, who received an excellent. The best color guard, also known as the flag line, was O’Neill. After the band performances, Pierce and Crofton’s drumlines showcased their percussion skills.

After talking to the band director, Mr. Michael Sindt, he commented, “The day went very well and the weather was perfect. The students and directors seemed to be in good spirits, and I feel like all the bands played to the best of their ability this time of year. This band has a lot of spirit which shows in how they march and play, and I am excited to show them off the next three Saturdays as we travel.”

The Pierce Marching Band will next be performing at USD for the Quad States Marching Festival on October 15.
