Girls Golf Takes on State Competition

by Emma Risinger

On Monday, October 11, and Tuesday, October 12, Pierce girls golf took on top competition at Elk’s Country Club in Columbus from class C schools all across the state. Juniors Alena Peters and Keli Shermer both competed for Pierce.

The competition was split up between two days, and Peters placed 24th overall, playing a 99 Monday and a 94 Tuesday. This totaled up to a 193. As for Shermer, she placed 58th overall, and she shot a 113 Monday and a 105 Tuesday, giving her a total of 218.

Coach Melinda Stelling remarked on the girls’ performance out on the green saying, “I was pleased with Alena and Keli's performances at state. Nerves might have been a factor on the first day, but they both came back the second day and improved their scores. It was a great experience for them.”

As for a team member, Shermer gave insight on her first experience competing at state when she said, “I was pretty nervous the first day and even though I didn't play my best, I still tried to have fun with it. The second day went a lot better. I think I got more used to the course and some of my teammates were watching me, which helped. I just wanted to have a good time and experience what it was like being at state, so even if it wasn't my best round of golf I still enjoyed and learned from it.”

Overall, it seems the girls got a lot just by attending the competition. Now that the season is wrapped up, the girls will have a strong sense of know-how for next year and will know how to get to where they have and beyond.
