Speech Team Competes with Confidence

by Michaela McWilliams

The Pierce Speech team members grabbed their scripts and headed over to Hartington bright and early on Saturday, February 1. The varsity added another win to their record while the junior varsity placed second.

Already having one win under their belt, the members were confident and ready to compete.

Maiya Bauman and Mark Venteicher competed in duet acting and received first. Also competing in duet acting were Caydan Retzlaff and Halle Ross who placed second.

Venteicher and Retzlaff also competed in extemporaneous speaking; Venteicher receiving fourth and Retzlaff placing sixth.

Baumann placed first in humorous prose and a team consisting of Baumann, Retzlaff, Ross, Klarissa Norris, and Alyssa Cederburg placed third in oral interpretation of drama (OID).

Ross also received second in serious prose, and Norris placed second in informative speaking.

Cederburg received fifth in serious prose.

Zachary Price competed in both entertainment speaking and poetry receiving fifth in both. Larissa Meier competed in persuasive speaking and placed sixth.

For junior varsity, Michaela McWilliams received first in JV Persuasive Speaking. Kaila Spieker placed second in JV informative speaking, and a JV OID consisting of Spieker, Nikolas Harvey, Brielle Unseld, Zaylah Pfansteil, and Dalton Svoboda placed third.

Also placing third was Madison Altwine in JV poetry. Katie Vogt received fifth in JV extemporaneous speaking, and Keli Shermer placed fifth in JV persuasive speaking. Receiving sixth was Ciara Garcia in JV entertainment speaking and Pfansteil in poetry.

Freshman Nikolas Harvey stated, “For the very scarce amount of people that we had for junior varsity, I feel that we did exceptionally well, considering that we received runner-up.”

Senior Maiya Bauman commented, “I believe that everyone on our team felt more prepared and confident with one competition already under their belt. This resulted in everyone feeling confident and just having fun with their pieces which really helped them achieve their placings in finals.”

Coach Melissa Legate said, “It’s nice to have the team building some momentum early on as well as building their confidence.”
