Speech Team Triumphs at Districts

Flood conditions could not stop the PHS speech team, who competed in districts hosted by Boone Central for the C1-4 competition on Wednesday, March 13. The team were district champions and are sending eight entries of 11 students to state speech in Kearney on March 21.

The top three entries in each of the nine events advanced to state. Macie Timm, Dylan Delka, Janae Arens, Katrina Meier, and Mark Venteicher were district champions in OID. Katrina Meier was district champion in informative speaking. Macie Timm was district champion in entertainment speaking. Mark Venteicher was district champion in extemporaneous speaking. Janae Arens and Dylan Delka placed 2nd in duet acting. Maiya Baumann placed 2nd in humorous prose. Elizabeth Harris, Greta Guercilena, Zane Gleason, Maiya Baumann and Caydan Retzlaff placed 3rd in OID. Shelby White placed 3rd in informative speaking.

Kiley Bierman and Halle Ross placed 4th in duet acting. Tanner Kuper placed 5th in persuasive speaking. Klarissa Norris placed 6th in humorous prose. Caydan Retzlaff placed 6th in extemporaneous speaking.

Coach Melissa Legate said, “The team has worked extra hard in the last week to achieve their goals of going to state, and it showed. Although some of our competitors did not advance to Kearney, they all contributed to the team title and have so much to be proud of.”

The state meet will be held at the University of Nebraska Kearney on Thursday, March 21.
