Angie Schroeder (top row, right) joined other members of the UNK 1986-87 women's basketball team that was honored as a Team of Distinction at ceremonies at UNK last weekend.

Angie Schroeder, health and physical education teacher at Pierce High, was among a group of athletes honored as a Team of Distinction at a University of Nebraska alumni event this past weekend in Kearney. Schroeder was a member of the 1986-87 women’s basketball team, one of UNK’s most successful teams. With a record of 21-9, this team earned a national 16th seed, losing to the eventual national champions in overtime in round one of the NCAA tournament. It was the first team in UNK women’s basketball history to make the national tournament.

It was a weekend full of basketball memories for Schroeder and her teammates, beginning with a dinner event at the UNK Alumni House on Friday evening, a scrimmage and shoot-around on Saturday, attendance at the UNK women’s basketball team’s game with Chadron State, and the “Team of Distinction” honor presented at halftime of the game.

UNK began recognizing Teams of Distinction in 2003, and since then has recognized ten other teams.

Schroeder remembered her career playing basketball at UNK with joy and said that it was one of the times when she felt most truly appreciated.
