Students Named to All-state Choir and Band
Sudbeck Chosen to All-State Band by Matthew Lukens
Logan Sudbeck has been chosen from auditions to perform in the 2010 all-state band in Lincoln November 18-20. Emily Taylor was chosen alternate. In the past weeks, many students have been working very hard to gain a spot in the all state band. On October 9, students performed various bits of music for the tryouts. Each student had to play two etudes, memorize 8 scales and play a part of the music that will be performed on the concert day.
Sudbeck was selected to play the baritone. He is a senior at Pierce High.
Emily Taylor, alternate for the mallets, is also a senior.
All state band members will go to Lincoln and practice with the other selectees prior to the concert. The students will also listen to some of the best bands and choirs from Nebraska. The students will be working with an internationally-known conductor and composer and play with the best musicians in the state. The concert will be performed on Saturday, November 20 at the Lied Center on the University of Nebraska campus.
Director Mike Sindt said, They did a very fine job, and the students had good auditions.”
Students Make All State Choir by Matthew Lukens
Amy Fleer has been selected to sing in the Nebraska Choral Directors Association All State Choir. It is her second time achieving this honor. Molly Harris and Kristin Canaday were chosen alternates.
Fleer is a junior. Canaday is a senior and was alternate last year as well, and Harris, a sophomore, was chosen to the state junior high honor choir last year.
Choir students have been practicing for a spot on the All State Choir. Tryouts were October 9, during which students had to sing various pieces of music in front of judges. Fleer said “I was very relieved that I was able to make it again.” She said she loves the music: “It’s very cool because it’s in a lot of different languages,” and she added that her favorite part of All-State Choir is meeting kids from all over the state.
Selected singers will have rehearsals November 18-20 in Lincoln. They will be able to visit exhibits presented by many colleges. The students will also see many different types of musical displays where they can purchase and hear various types of music. After the rehearsals and listening to performances by the Concordia College Choir, the students will perform in their concert. The performance will be Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at the Lied Center on the University of Nebraska campus.
Music director, Mrs. Constance Jessen, said, “Those who tried out worked hard and raised the level of their musicianship and the musicianship of the whole choir.”
